DOES WILSON RAMOS DESERVE TO BE TRADE OFF TWINS?
Two consecutive amazing Spring Trainings haven’t being enough for Wilson Ramos. Growing in Twins Minor League system is not an easy thing to handle if the catcher who is in Majors is Joe Mauer, yes the one who has inked an 8 years contract to stay probably his whole career with Minnesota.
“I know I played pretty good here. For me, I make the team,” Ramos said. “Right now I’m hitting .400, but I have Joe Mauer in front of me. He signed a pretty good contract and I know I (will) not play in front of him, but I’m ready to play.”
Ramos is a strong hitter and his defensive tools are getting better as long as his playing daily. And that was the reason Twins used to justified sent him to Rochester Red Wings, their AAA team. Wilson left with a .400 batting average (12 for 30) and a .400 on-base percentage, four doubles, two home runs and six runs batted in. He struck out only twice.
He jumped three categories in minors the last 2 seasons, but a middle finger left hand fracture and a hamstring on his right leg put him away of fields about three months last season, his first one playing daily as New Britain Rock Cats catcher where he left an .317 batting average playing 54 games, taking 205 AB, 65 hits 16 of them doubles, four home runs and 29 runs batted in.
“We sent Ramos down. Ramos is a starting catcher, all right? And Drew (Butera) projects more as a backup catcher. They both can throw, and they both can catch. Ramos projects as a major league starting catcher. If not right now, very soon. It’s not easy. This is a really, really tough one.” Said Ron Gardenhire on Wednesday, when they made the announcement.
That makes each baseball specialist pop this question… Does Wilson Ramos deserved to be trade off Twins?. Which would be the best thing to do if you have a catcher in your system that could be a future all star and you actually have one?
Twins is having such a crisis for a closer since Joe Nathan is going to missed the 2010 season due to a surgery and they decided to have one by committee. Each setup in club could have the chance to close and save games.
Manager Ron Gardenhire said about this crisis on trading for a closer: “Teams know the situation and they want your whole organization, and it’s not going to happen.”
But what would happen if the committee cannot assure winning games having troubles with 8th and 9th episodes?
I have no doubt about Wilson Ramos is a desirable player for a team needing a catcher, having the plus his a good hitter too. So, I think there could be a trade in the air…
